Prediction of Mechanical IntegrityWhat is it?Currently, there is no accurate non-invasive measure of overall bone strength. Areal bone mineral density (aBMD) is the most common surrogate measurement for assessing the bone strength of the proximal femur associated with osteoporosis. Additional factors however contribute to the overall strength of a bone such as the proximal femur, primarily anatomical geometry. A number of alternative approaches may be considered to predict mechanical integrity including finite element analysis of X-ray images (FEXI), and ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. Their aim is essentially the same — to provide the most accurate and clinically valuable physical measurement of bone surrogate for fracture load. Q-BIC Projects
